What Changed in Redistricting?

In 2022, the Kansas legislature passed SB 355, redrawing the state's congressional map. Governor Kelly vetoed the bill. The Republican-controlled legislature overrode her veto.

  • The legal challenge. A district court found the new map unconstitutionally gerrymandered — a violation of the Kansas constitution's protections against racial discrimination, infringement of free speech, and denial of equal protection. The Kansas Supreme Court overturned that ruling. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the case. The current map stands.
  • What changed in KS-3. Wyandotte County was split along I-70. The northern portion — home to a significant Latino community — was moved to the 2nd District. Anderson County and Franklin County, both rural and Republican-leaning, were added. Miami County was fully included. The district became geographically larger but its urban core was diluted.
  • Where KS-3 stands today. The 3rd District now covers all of Johnson County, southern Wyandotte County south of I-70, all of Miami County, all of Anderson County, and all of Franklin County.
